Clothes for 4, 5 & 6 Year Olds: Fit Guide

Short answer: when choosing clothes for a 4-, 5- or 6-year-old, begin with the child’s current measurements and the garment’s dimensions—not the birthday alone. Age labels such as 4–5, 5–6 and 6–7 are useful starting points, but two children of the same age can need different lengths, widths or waistband fits.

Which label should I check first?

Measure the child before measuring the label

Measure standing height on a hard, level floor with shoes removed and the child looking straight ahead. For clothing decisions, also note chest, waist and the length needed for the garment type. The CDC explains that accurate measurements and accurate age calculations matter when interpreting child growth; clothing selection uses a different purpose, but the same principle applies: use a real measurement rather than an estimate from memory.

Compare a garment that already fits

A well-fitting top and bottom from the child’s wardrobe can be more useful than an age label. Lay each garment flat without stretching it. Compare top width, body length, shoulder position, sleeve opening, waistband width, rise and leg length with the seller’s garment measurements.

Do not compare a body measurement with a flat garment measurement as if they are identical. A flat width may represent one side of the garment, and stretch can change how the waistband behaves. Follow the measurement method used on the seller’s chart.

At this age, check whether the child can raise both arms, sit cross-legged, bend and use the toilet without the garment pulling or slipping. Look at the neck opening, shoulder line, waist and rise.
